Stories from the studio:
Why I’m Inspired by
New Zealand Birds
Since moving to the West Coast over 32 years ago, birds have become a constant presence in my life. Rescuing Pedro the penguin was one of my first encounters, a moment that sparked a quiet commitment to caring for the birds around me.
Many of the species I depict are endangered. Their decline reflects a wider issue: how easily we overlook what’s small but essential. When I see an injured bird, I see a neighbour. My jewellery and artwork are ways of paying attention, honouring the natural world’s pace and resisting the noise of modern life.
Some pieces reflect on loss, like the extinction of the sacred huia. While art can’t undo harm, it can hold space for remembrance.
These birds speak to resilience, connection, and the need to slow down. Through this work, I hope others come to see them not as background, but as beings worth noticing, and protecting.
